What surprised you about your educational history?
Twice I listed books as teachers. Once in childhood for vicarious learning, and in adulthood for self-directed learning. I was also surprised by the patterns and trends I found.
What patterns do you notice emerging?
My chocolate chips are those who give me knowledge and tools to teach myself, as well as coping strategies. Trust advocacy, humor, and quikiness are also strong undercurrents. My teachers are also developmentally correlated - family at a young age, institutional educators during the school years, family and mentors/informal educators in my 20s and 30s.
The cat fur in my cookie are the close minded, linear people. They offered no warmth and were belittling. Some dead-ended my interests and areas I wanted to explore.
Hi Beth! I completely LOVE the playful metaphor of cookie monster and the ingredients of the cookie. As I read down, when I got the cat fur, I literally laughed so loudly I spooked my own cat and woke up my daughter (sleeping in the next room). Brilliant! I can relate to cat hair in my cookies, both literally and figuratively..... Belittling is one of the most damaging thing educators do, and I often wonder if some of the teachers in my past who were my cat fur, even realized they were doing it. Im not sure.
ReplyDeleteIm very much looking forward to getting to know you through out the class. Did you find specific teachers correlated with specific ingredients ? Can an ingredient stand alone? (chocolate chips I suppose..) Or are the ingredients relational? :)
I really like your metaphor of the cookie and ingredients. I also really the cat fur part, so relatable and easy to understand. I guess if the cookie is good enough you can secretly pick the fur out and continue eating. Much like the negative people in our lives, we can just pick them out of your life and move on.
